Prayer flags at...Bou
It poured with rain the day we went to see Boudhanath. In between the downpours, the prayer flags flapped in the breeze, their colours made more vivid for being wet.

Zoals te verwachten is Lakeside in Pokhara een weinig inspirerende toeristische enclave, zogezegd een 'necessary evil' voor als je dicht bij de Annapurna wilt komen. Wij zijn geen geweldige restaurants tegengekomen, maar de samosa's die daar op straat worden verkocht voor weinig geld (15-30 Rs) zijn zeer zeker aan te raden! Als je tijd en geld wilt besparen en on the go een snack of lunch wilt meepikken, neem een authentieke samosa, geserveerd in een krant, op straat!

Afgelopen augustus (2011) waren wij in totaal een week in Kathmandu. We sliepen in de Karma Guest House in Thamel (de toeristenwijk) voor ongeveer 3 euro pppn Wij houden er van om zoveel mogelijk te voet onze omgeving te verkennen (deels vanwege kostenbesparing). Je vergeet dan heel eventjes dat je een toertist bent en kun je je even buiten de gebaande paden wanen. In Kathmandu is dat makkelijk te doen, en zeker de moeite waard. Loop vanuit Thamel naar Durbar Square (~30min), de belangrijkste bestemming met vele historische gebouwen. Onderweg zie je talloze kleine pleintjes, markten, en tempels. Verken de omgeving rondom Thamel zodat je meer het gevoel krijgt dat je in een echte stad bent, in plaats van in een afgebakend toeristendistrict. Loop te voet naar Swayambunath (45-60 minuten) en je ziet steeds meer groen en heuvels, en uiteindelijk een mooi uitzicht over de hele vallei. Loop te voet naar Patan Durbar Square en Boudanath (allebei ca. 60 min vanuit Thamel). Je leert de stad beter kennen te voet en je komt op die manier ook goedkopere restaurantjes en winkeltjes tegen.
Zicht op Mt. Everest.
Dit is het moment waarop ik Mt. Everest voor het eerst zag! Vanuit de cockpit van een Beechcraft 1900d tijdens een toeristische bergvlucht vanuit Kathmandu. Onvergetelijke ervaring, maar ik zou het absoluut niet nog een keer doen. Een paar weken nadat wij meevlogen is precies hetzelfde vliegtuig namelijk neergestort... Too close for comfort. Als je het nog niet hebt geraden, het is de hoogste top in de rechter helft van het plaatje! De Himalaya's zien er vanuit de lucht echt onwerkelijk uit.. de bergen lijken vanuit het niets tussen de wolken uit te stijgen :)
Slingerend en/of...bi
Lopend van Thamel (het toeristendistrict van Kathmandu) naar Swayambunath op een hete ochtend in augustus. Prachtige stupa met uitzicht over een groot deel van de Kathmandu-vallei. Achter de stupa ligt een tuin met duizenen gebedsvlaggetjes en honderden aapjes. Na Swayambunath naar Patan Durbar Square gelopen en daarna weer terug naar Thamel. Tip: doe Kathmandu zoveel mogelijk te voet, dan zie je meer dan vanuit een (fiets)taxi.
Sunset at Haeundae...
As the sun was setting behind the mountains, Haeundae Beach became a hive of activity. Families laid out picnics, street vendors set up their stalls, and para-gliders swooped overhead.
Boom met mos in Fores
De Forest of Dean is een natuurreservaat in Glocestershire, zuidwest-Engeland, tussen de rivieren Wye en Severn. Door de extra neerslag dit jaar voelt het bos extra groen en gezond aan. Het gebied is geweldig voor wandelen, mountainbiken, vissen en kajakken/kano-en. Typisch Britse countryside dus. Cornwall, Devon en Wales zijn ook in de buurt, er is genoeg te zien.
Restaurant The Granar
Authentiek Britse pub/restaurant in Hay on Wye, in zuidoost-Wales vlakbij de grens met Engeland. Hay on Wye is een klein, pitoresk plaatsje dat bekend staat om zijn tweedehands boekenwinkeltjes.
Spices at the market
As well as all the fish at Jagalchi Fish Market, we found chili peppers and fruit. Suddenly a waft of spice interrupted the strong fish smell, and I quickly snapped this pile of spices and herbs.
She sells sea...shell
These women were busy crushing shells to release the soft, squishy meat inside. Everything was wet and glistening in the sun. There were things for sale here that we'd never seen before. Can anyone tell us what the pink tube things at the front right are?
Piles of shells
Jagalchi fish market sells everything you could possibly find in the sea. Piles of shellfish were kept cool under brightly colored umbrellas and watered by pipes.
Octopus escape!
We spotted a pulpy octopus squirming desperately across the concrete to freedom, only to be roughly plucked from the ground and dropped back into its bucket with a defeated splash.
Long fish
We spent a morning at Jagalchi fish market. Weaving our way through the strong smells, vibrant colours, splashes and shouts, the light glinted off the scales of the freshly caught fish.
Street scene in Busan
This photo really captures for me the warm week we spent in Busan. Looking at it even now I feel an urge to follow one of the street signs and grab something spicy to eat.
My fortune
In Kyoto we found some English 'omikuji' (fortunes at shrines and temples). This one was, as it says, 'very good,' so I folded it up and kept it in my diary. If you get a 'bad' fortune, you can leave it tied it on a tree near the temple.

You can get these 'omikuji' fortunes at all temples and shrines in Japan. Each place has its own particular way of getting them- sometimes you choose a stick which corresponds to your fortune, sometimes you put money into a vending machine and your fortune pops out the bottom.
Too good to eat
This sweet, to eat with green tea, was almost too beautiful to eat. It was powdery and soft, and the gold-leaf on the top was a lovely addition.
Time for tea!
We stopped to have a cup of frothy green tea. It's bitter taste is not to everyone's liking, but we love it. The sweet cake that we had with the tea had a gold-leaf image on the top of the kinkakuji.
Shrine
We found these statues in the garden near Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion). Their images have been almost completely erased by time, and the moss that covers them adds to a sense of age. The silvery shine of the coins of the floor reminded me of the golden shine of Kinkakuji.

The weather wasn't great when we visited this famous golden temple in Kyoto, so maybe this affected our opinion of the building. It was, of course, very impressive, but a little gaudy after the calm elegance of Kiyomizudera.
Snow on the roof
I've heard from friends living in Kyoto that because it is enclosed by mountains it gets extremely hot in the summer and extremely cold in the winter. When we visited in February there was still some snow on the tiled roofs.

The famous view of Kiyomizudera in Kyoto. We were lucky enough to be there as the sun was setting, which bathed the wooden building in a golden light.
'Love Stone' at...Kiy
The English description for this 'Love Stone' was as follows: "This stone is called 'Love-fortune-telling' stone. If you walk safely from this stone to the other with your eyes closed, for once, your wish'll be granted soon. If you can't, it will be long before your love is realized. And it is said taking advice requires you to have someone who'll help you achieve your love."

The snow on the roof in this photo reminds me how very cold this trip was. The warm tones of the setting sun gave everything a golden glow, but my hands were freezing as I took my gloves off to take this photo.
