The woodchopper
Heel bedankt voor de leuke reacties van mijn wat oude gescaned fotos, hier is een andere van de anolog tijdperk Again, in HP, Kulu Valley, Shiva Ram has just returned from chopping wood, essential for heating and cooking. At the time there was no running water or electricity in the village. This is April and its important to stock the wood piles high before the monsoon rains start.

The last bus
Also scanned from the analog box. Coming back from the fort at Kumbhalgarh, we had to try to catch a bus. deciding to let this one go and wait for the next, hoping it would be less crowded and which gave me time to get my camera out. The next was just as crowded so we didnt gain anything - except maybe a nice photo.
Shy, but so curious
An old scanned anologue foto. A village, (the name I cant remember) high in the mountains in the Parvati valley where we lived in 1978-1979 (see blog) . The people here were very shy, curious of us, and it was a long while before we felt able to take photos.
The Final Year
During their final study year young students take time to visit the Temple of Literature, Vietnam's foremost Confucian sanctuary and center of learning dating from 1070. A quiet resting place from the hassle and bussle of the city. (See Frank Brummans (Indi) tip.)
Dawn
It is 5am, it's still dark the alarm is ringing, why? To climb the hill behind the guest house (the highest point in Mrauk U) and wait for the sun the rise........exquisite. Enjoy!!
Modern Girl
Nowhere is the staggering urbanisation of the world more evident than in Chongqing, Little more than a generation ago, this was a city where Red Guards in Mao tunics chanted anti-imperialist slogans. Today, young people with money dress much like their counterparts in Amsterdam, London, Chicago or Tokyo. If anything, their values are even more materialistic.
The Morning Papers
Even though we can now get instant and updated news from the internet, the morning papers read over breakfast still remains tradition. Walking through the streets of Jhalawar, I notice the sunglasses seller completely absorbed in his morning news.
Mrauk U
Mrauk U, is in my opinion a must to visit in Myanmar. Some guide books talk about a one or two day visit but having spent 10 days there I can say that there is so much to see and do. It is not only a place to visit for the temples, but the village and the surrounding countryside is beautiful to discover by bike. The day boat trip up-river from Sitwe is a delight in itself on a sail boat, and very easy to arrnge through the locals at Sittwe harbour. There are a few good places to stay in Mrauk U and I have just heard a new top-end hotel has opened, but my favourite is nestled just under the hill which provides the most fantastic views at dawn. (See photo - monkeys egg,)
Mrauk U again?
We have just booked our flights back to Yangon for December and now are eagerly researching and preparing our three week trip. We will begin the south, an area as yet unvisited by us and are thinkign whther to return to the special place of Mrauk U. On one hand, I have the feeling, "never go back" keeping the memories of the 10 fantastic days that we spent there in 2006 untouched. On the other hand, it would be so nice to be able to take all of our Mrauk U photos, printed out back to the village, plus some warm clothes for people to help stave off those chilly mornings. Decisions, decisions, what a luxury problem!
Hot Dog
After a cold January night in Mrauk U, the villagers light their morning fires in the courtyard to warm up a little. Also the animals:)
Lifting the Veil
And the thrid veil photo today. Also taken in Rajasthan but here we are in Khumbalgarh, again a road worker, I found her old sikver jewellery beautiful but no matter how I tried I could not coax her from out of her veil.
Behind the Veil
The second veil photo today. Taken on the streets of Jojawar. Although her veil covers her face we can still see her friendly smile and sparkling eye. I also like the fly:)
The Veil
Trying to get away from the traffic exhaust and breathe some fresh air I spent some time people watching in Lumpini Park, Bangkok. I thought she looked so elelgant and when the breeze blew her veil .........................
Under the Budha
Shwedagon Pagoda Early morning, throngs of devotees performing the morning rituals, but she was alone. Lost in her thoughts under the gaze of the huge budha.
Friday night on the..
Friday night in Tra Vinh, three hours bus ride from Can Tho. The main reason to travel to Tra Vinh was to visit Ang Pagoda an ancient Khmer temple. The pagoda is 7 kilometres from the centre of Tra Vinh town, hopping on a xe om (motorbike taxi). The pagoda is surrounded by old trees of Ba Om pond the grounds are a bird sanctuary where storks flock at dusk, the rainy season affording the best opporunity to see the birds. So we thought, right time, right place, but although it was nice to see, it wasnt worth the long bus ride, the storks were nesting in the tree tops which were so high. These monks had just finshed evening prayers and were waiting for the trishaw driver to take them into town for the evening. They told me to the internet cafe:)

Dreaming on the stair
The daughter of the owner of our guesthouse in the lakeside town of Sengkang, in eastern Sulawesi, sits deep in her own thoughts on the stairs.

Tranquility with a...
My first stop in Northern Sulawesi, on a beautiful 3 km unspoilt beach, jungle to the waters edge. A few cottages to rent on the beach only 12 europeans staying there and the others being divers, and what do divers do all day -- dive. Therefore, we had the entire beach to ourselves sharing it only with a few stray dogs and many birds and butterflies. As non-divers we enjoyed snorkelling in the coral reef just a few meters from shore. You can see the coral reef very cleary in the photo and the channel that the fisherman have made to allow access to the sea. In the distance two volcanos and the Tangkoko National park home of the tarsier. For now enjoy the tranquility, it may not last........as I explained in my earlier upload. (Green not Gold)
Millions of Slumdogs
After watching Slumdog Millionaire again recenlty, I remembered how happy I was that Slumdog Millionaire swept the Oscars. A rags to riches story where the real lives of a few kids, (the real stars of the film) have been changed and if this film can bring to the attention of the masses the plight of so many others it deserves every accolade it wins. A portret of street kids that live and beg by the roadside in Delhi, (this may be too gritty for this site, I wonder.)
Durga and the Chai...
On the streets of Jojawar, a "small" business man proudly pours his chai. He doesnt have his own premises his "shop" is set-up in the doorway of another business. I am sure he pays some kind of rent. I like how Durga (the potrayed hindu goddess) watches him.
Toe curlingly...beaut
After Kumbalghar we travelled by jeep through the Aravalli hills to Ranakpur, a village in a valley on the western side of the Aravalli Range. The Jain temple there is largely considered to have been built between the late 14th to mid-15th centuries. Over 1444 marble pillars, carved in exquisite detail, support the temple. The pillars are all differently carved. ISO 1600 used to catch the litle but natural light
The Doorman
Our guesthouse in Ranakpur may have been modest but the flambouyant doorman more than compensated. Ranakpur is located in the mountain ranges of Pali district, and is reached after passing through the lush valleys of the Aravali hills.
BBBB
Early morning on a Beach on the Burmese coast on the Bay of Bengal. The women make their way along the beach to meet the fisherman in their returning boats.
At the Barber
Everything on the street, that's what I really like about India, on a wet Sunday in Vlaardingen I miss this. A barbers shop in Bundi, Rajasthan
