Pamukale
Pamukkale is the place with the white calcium terraces. It is quite unique. It is one of the most famous places in Turkey. My first view of Pamukkale and its "white cotton" cliff was just outside of the teraces area It looks just like a mountain covered with snow, it seemed out of place because everything else was green.
Fairy Chimneys
The interesting rock formations, known as “fairy chimneys”, have been formed as the result of the erosion of this tufa layer, sculpted by wind and flood water, running down on the slopes of the vallyes. Water has found its way through the valleys creating cracks and ruptures in the hard rock. The softer, easily erodable material underneath has been gradually swept away receding the slopes and in this way, conical formations protected with basalt caps have been created.

I took this on a clear day on board a British Midland flight from Heathrow.

In 1881 four years after his death the building was sold and made into a very elegant and luxurios hotel to host aristocrats and heads of state.
