The End of the Pier(s)

Groot-Brittannië

We reach the end of our walk 11.5 kms to Deal pier, time to get a bite to eat or picnic on the beach and then turn around again for the walk home.

The seaside piers around the coast of Britain stand as a reminder of the achievements of Victorian engineers and. At one stage almost a hundred piers existed: now less than half remain and several face an uncertain future. Some have been lost to fire, others to the weather, others to neglect.
This is Deal pier and the third to be built, The first pier at Deal was built in 1838 and was washed away in 1857. The second opened in 1864. A reading room and salt baths were added in the 1870s and a pier-head pavilion in 1886. In 1954, work on the present pier commenced after a Dutch ship collided with the pier during the war.
A bar/cafe sits at the end of the pier offering views across to France which is 25 miles across the Channel.
