The sign-writer
Myanmar
My grandfather was a sign-writer. He worked on the ships in the London docks, beautifully decorating the ships with his calligraphy. Golden letters on walnut wood indicating the various cabins, restaurants, toilets, etc. As a young child I was fascinated by his hand and that fascination remains. Without really knowing it I love to include hand painted signs in my images. In Burma many signs are hand-painted, like this sign that will eventually adorn the side of a bus. It probably is just the name if the bus company, but with the curved letters and bold colors it looks much more romantic.
