Kwihi Tree

georgena

Aruba's vegetation has adapted well to its dry environment with desert landscape covered by rare cactuses, Aloe and the Kwihi Tree. Kwihi actually is an Indian word, unfortunatly I don't know what it means, sometimes it is mistaken for the Divi Tree but it has an entirely different shape. The local people use the wood from this tree for making furniture.

Sunset on Eagle Beach

georgena

I took this sunset photo at the Eagle beach one of the nicest beaches in Aruba. Not sure how it got that name, but it is the place where locals want to have a party. The sand is so pure you’ll swear it’s sugar, and water so calm, you’ll think you’re in a pool. ( No, I did not stick the bird on the branch) pure lucky shot.

Down Town by Night

georgena

L. G. Smith Boulevard is the main street of downtown Oranjestad, and connects the city with San Nicolas. It was named after Lloyd Gaston Smith, general manager of the Lago oil refinery in San Nicolas from 1933 to 1946. At the time, Lago was owned by Standard Oil Co. Of New Jersey, later Exxon Corp. The Casino is in the center,my version by night.

Red admiral

georgena

The Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) (previously also known as Pyrameis atalanta) is a well-known colourful butterfly, found in temperate Europe, Asia and North America. The Red Admiral has a two-inch (45–50 mm) wing span.[1] The species is resident only in warmer areas, but migrates north in spring, and sometimes again in autumn. This large butterfly is identified by its striking dark brown, red and black wing pattern. More specifically, the dark wings possess orange bands that cross the fore wings and on the outer edge of the hind wings; white spots on the dorsal fore wings near the front margin; reddish bars on dorsal surface of all four wings The caterpillar feeds on nettles, and the adult drinks from flowering plants like the Buddleia and overripe fruit. This is quite a mouthful, thanks to Wikepedia. I took this photo at a butterfly farm in Aruba.

Monstertje

Iguana can be found all over Aruba, took this picture in the Wilhelmina Park in Oranjestad When the animals are frightened by a predator or humans, they will attempt to flee, and if near a water, they dive into it and swim away. If cornered by a threat, the Iguana will extend and display the dewlap under its neck, that is a flap of skin which hangs under its neck, they stiffen and puff up their body, hiss, and bob its head up and down at the aggressor,If threat persists the Iguana can lash with its tail, bite and use its claws in defense, they can become up to 2 meters long from head to tail

Iguana

georgena

Of all the reptiles running through the hot and dry sand looking for shelter in among trees and cacti, the iguana is the most remarkable. A fully-grown male can reach a length of 2 meters including his tail. Should an iguana sense danger, its initial reaction is to change color, then it tries to find a place where it can camouflage better and blend in with its surroundings, if that is not possible they run as fast as possible, and they are surprisingly fast, they raise their bodies off the ground with their legs, and sprint off at an impressive pace, almost seeming to be running on tiptoe. These precious animals are still being hunted today. They are mostly relished in soups.

Cruise Ship

georgena

Aruba is considered one of the most tourism-friendly islands in the Caribbean, besides Papiamento most everyone speaks English, and they accepts the U.S. dollar, actually in Oranjestad everything is priced in dollars. Outside Oranjestad the prices are shown in Aruba guilders. Many years ago you could only get to the island by plane, now a days huge cruise ships docks there everyday in the high season, one bigger than the other, it is a beautiful sight watching these ships come in. I think they look like huge apartment buildings..

I took this picture while a group of dancers were giving a show at the Historical Museum in Aruba. You can see on the expression on this man's face that he is putting body and soul into the dance.

No, This is not carnival. Arubans are well-known for their fun, easy-going festivals and events. Also similar to the Bonbini festival is the weekly Caribbean festival This festival highlights Caribbean cultural heritage through traditional dance, music, food, and art. The festival begins with a music and dance performance, continues with an open-air street market. It is not only for tourist locals also enjoy these festivals. It was not easy to take pictures it was quite dark on the stage

I took this picture while sitting on the Becuti Beach having coctails It is unbelievable how these pelicans can be so accurate , they fly around quite high up above the water and when they spot a fish they just dive straight down even in between the people swimming in the water and bingo. It was not easy photographing because they move very fast and unexpected, many times I just had a splash of water and there is back lighting which makes this picture look B&W.
