Near Copàn you can visit Macaw mountain. A breeding program is underway to bring back the red macaw.
This macaw was / is a sacred bird for the Maya, the feathers were used by the elite for their headdress and ritual clothing.
A thoughtless side effect was that this beautiful bird disappeared completely in large parts of the Mayan Empire.
The breeding program is so successful that the governor had announced that he would be attending the release of the birds.
Everyone worked with all their might to prepare the reception, this group of dancers displayed an impressive piece of dance art.
Dad had already tipped me to visit Macaw mountain with his protégés, this event was an extra surprise.
Although they do not live far away, and before Copàñecas diminished or was admitted to the ruins free of charge, they had never been there.
Not selling / working means no food for them, so a well-intended allowance is actually without effect.
By taking them with them, providing them with food, they could get to know a part of them culture that they would not have seen otherwise, the effect was fantastic. I will definitely return, with this wonderful family. photo appears out of focus when opened, it is sharp but flat.
