A short boat-trip from Mrauk U took us to outlying Chin villages. This lady invited us to her house where we shared a coconut and bananas and she told us (via an interpreter) how she was tatooed as a young woman. She may look serious or sad here, but in fact she was quite the reverse. Fortunately, the practice stopped some 40 years ago, so in each village that I visited there were only several elderly ladies with facial tatooes.
The young women were tattoed to make them unattractive to prevent abduction by other tribes!
