Walmer Castle

Groot-Brittannië

We leave Kingsdown and the cliffs behind, we are now walkign on a foothpath along the beach, the seafront. On our left hand side is Walmer Cstle.
A small but significant castle built in 1540 as one of a chain of coastal artillery forts begun by Henry VIII in the late 1530s in the face of threatened invasion by Spain. From 1708 it became the official residence of the Lords Warden of the Cinque Ports, a position occupied by many distinguished people including the Duke of Wellington,(we call kaplarzen Wellington boots after the Duke and his original pair are still to be seen here) Sir Winston Churchill also lived here and if was a favorite castle of the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Her private garden is now opened to the public and is a prefect place to relax and read a book under one of the many mature trees or walk through the fragrant rose garden in summer.
The Warden's tea-room serves afternoon tea, with Kentish jam and home-made scones.
