This gentle and serene figure is known as Jizo, a Japanese Bodhisattva. Japanese Buddhists believe that Jizo assists the wandering souls of deceased children and those condemned to Hell. Jizo figures at Hase-dera in Kamakura are placed here by parents that have lost young infants or have miscarried.
